We are considering an Impreza 5 door to replace the Cooper S. She wants AWD and it can’t be much bigger than an Impreza or it won’t fit in her garage. What else should we be considering? We like wagons/hatches and would like something more reliable than the mini without going over 30k unless it’s amazing . The mini  has been good to us but the value is under 10k now and a big repair would be extremely annoying.

Well, you could get a Mazda CX-3 . Is that big enough for what you need but small enough for the garage? There’s also a CR-V.

New or used?

FWIW, my partner recently had an Impreza as a rental car and we both hated it. Have you driven one yet? It has decent power but it felt so cheap. He just had a Chevy Cruze and it was nicer in nearly every way. Still felt cheap, but not as cheap as the Impreza.

I have 5 cars of covered parking but she wants her daily to live in the attached 1 car garage. I get to walk to the shop every day. Horrible 20' walk when there is 2' of fresh snow.

If she doesn’t like the Impreza Sport, have her sit in an Mazda 3 (I know it’s not awd - she might like it enough to want it anyways.) If you don’t mind going upscale the A3 5dr hatch starts around 32 now.

We were given a new sedan, and that was the one we hated. Maybe it was a rental special where they cut costs , but it was nasty.

Alternately, the Mazda CX3, which isn't as nice as the Mazda3, but is still decent and offers awd.

AWD is a must have and VAG cars seem like a maintenance nightmare so I haven’t considered them. Are they better than I’m thinking?

Is the new impreza hatch really all that much smaller than the outback and forester in outer dimensions? The size differences really seem blurred with modern cars. But if they would fit, they are both just much nicer Subarus in every way. I've always been a fan of the new Gen outback and really liked the uptrim interiors.

the answer can only be polestar.

slightly over the 30k mark for 2015-2016, more reliable than a mini, a touch bigger than an impreza (1" longer, 3" wider, same height), AWD, and best of all, it comes in Rebel Blue.

CX-3 is tiny inside vs. the Impreza. My wife had an Impreza until recently, now replaced with a CX-5 because she wanted something bigger/higher. But we looked at the CX-3 when shopping for the Impreza and the back seat and trunk are a joke.

I have an ‘08 Impreza hatch with, I believe, around 180k miles on it at this point. I love it. It creeks a little, but overall I’ve had no extra fees other than normal maintenance. I have no intentions of parting with it any time soon, but when I do.. that day will be tough. This car has done me solid
